Chidambaram House, originally the family home of the renowned classical dancer/activist Mrinalini Sarabhai and Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, a distinguished physicist, holds historical significance. It sits on a raised area overlooking the Sabarmati River, boasting a scenic garden.

Designed by architect Gira Sarabhai in 1952, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s style, the house features robust construction with cantilevered roofs, stone walls, and large windows. Its interior, adorned with modern art and furniture, offers views of the river and garden.

As one of the city’s earliest modernist buildings, Chidambaram House has hosted intellectuals from various fields for decades. Over time, it underwent several modifications to accommodate changing family dynamics.

After Mrinalini Sarabhai’s passing in 2016, we were tasked with renovating her space for her grandson’s family. Preserving the essence of the original design while addressing structural issues was crucial. The renovation involved meticulous planning, including recycling old materials and using traditional building techniques.

The new design aimed to create a private enclave within the larger house, integrating seamlessly with nature. The renovated space now includes a living area, kitchen, and bedrooms, maintaining the original architectural features. Large windows allow natural light and views of the lush surroundings, while the outdoor deck serves as an extension of the living space.

The integration of indoor and outdoor areas enhances the living experience, providing a connection to the city’s history and natural beauty. Overall, the renovation honors the heritage of Chidambaram House while meeting the needs of modern living.
