On October 30, 2023 a tragic incident unfolded in Binghamton University, a wave of shock was spread throughout the university when Natalia Malcevic was found dead outside the Bartle library tower. The untimely demise of a 19 years old sophomore student left the university and the family grappling.
It was a Monday morning, at 8:56 a.m., B-Alert was sent to the campus community stating that police were investigating an incident although not mentioning the very details in its entirety to save terror among the whole university as there was no threat to the campus as whole.
Subsequently, an announcement alert comes up at 9:23 am for the cancellation of Monday’s classes and more information will be notified further. Only at 10:47 am the final announcement was made for the day that the investigation had been completed and the scene had been cleared.
Later on, an updated notification was made at 2:35 pm from Stenger’s office stating that the police investigation did not indicate any criminal activity and the student’s family has been notified about the tragic event. This information comes from the confirmed reports and statement from University President Harvey Stenger. In the investigation scene, the University police department and Harpur’s Ferry both responded.

The university mourned over the loss of a young talented student, and authorities launched an investigation to unravel the mystery of the student’s death. The possibilities leading to the tragic happening remained clouded for a while until finally her death was associated with suicide case, which in turn raises a lot more questions as to what could have caused her to take her life.
Despite living a life filled with achievements, academic pioneers and passion for learning, Natalia took her life that bewilders many as to what could have been the reasons that her bright eyes couldn’t express and went on cutting her life short. Academic community and Natalia’s grieving family seek answers.

Natalia’s death served as a tragic reminder for the importance of mental health concerns. Even after achieving academic success and insatiable curiosity, her suicide highlights the importance of catering mental health and understanding when we have to seek help.
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention states suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, and it is estimated to be 25 suicide attempts for every suicide happened. Organisation states mental suffering is often the leading cause of suicide.
