In 1997, just two semesters into college, he left for Atlanta with guitarist Clay Cook, with whom he had formed a rock duo Lo-Fi Masters, which lasted a little while. They performed in coffee houses, and clubs such as Eddie’s Attic, and more. During the time, they were faced with musical differences, according to Cook, who said that Mayer wanted to move toward pop music. After they split up, John continued to play in nearby clubs to develop his skills and gain a small following.
