Whenever we want to know any country or any culture, the contribution of its historical places, buildings, temples, mosques, and forts is the main one, which has preserved such events of time, buildings, and their own strength. Similarly, one of them is the citadel of Aleppo.

The last explorer who is an integral part of Syrian history is the Citadel of Aleppo. You know the oldest and one of the largest castles is the Citadel of Aleppo. It is located in Syria’s big city of Aleppo. It’s also a remarkably preserved medieval castle. The Citadel of Aleppo has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986.

Every old building stands with its history and culture; in the same way, this unique structure is becoming a historical and cultural collection and treasure of Syria.  The earliest recorded history of the monumental Citadel of Aleppo dates back to the 3rd millennium BC, when it was part of the ancient city of Aleppo, according to the oldest archaeological evidence.

History

The Citadel Hill was used as far back as the 3rd millennium BC. It was also a stronghold of various civilizations, including the Assyrians, Greeks, Armenians, Romans, Byzantines, Ayyubids, Mamluks, and Ottomans. It is known that most of the structures that are visible today are from the Ayyubid period. The recently discovered temple, which was in the middle of the mountain, is believed to be dedicated to the god Hadad, an Asian Storm God who is mentioned in the 3rd millennium BC Ebla and Mari cuneiform. At that time, Aleppo was known as the “City of Hadad,” the capital of Yamhad.

After that, when Alexander the Great began his rule over it. In history, it seems that Seleucus Nicator, the successor of Alexander the Great, first used military abode.. He used them to house the soldiers.  The Romans and Byzantines then used it as the residence of the city’s governors, with two new churches built there during the Byzantine period. Thus, the history of the Citadel of Aleppo has become very rich.

Social and Cultural Diversity

The old city of Aleppo has been sitting in its outer world, embracing the time of the rulers who crossed it, which plays a big role in the development of culture and society, the footprints of rulers like Hittite, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ayyubid are still leaving their mark there through the mosques, churches and various monuments they established. Thus, the city of Aleppo has incorporated the diversity of social and cultural aspects within itself, which has become an excellent example of human culture.

It is said that when Aristotle, who was a great philosopher, was very impressed by the natural beauty of Aleppo and the environment there, he also spent a part of his life there, thus Aleppo became very influential in terms of social, cultural, and environmental aspects.

Thus, if one wants to know, understand, and experience the cultural heritage of any country and its contribution, monuments like the Citadel of Aleppo can help in this. The Citadel of Aleppo is an important archaeological site in the world, which is protected by UNESCO. Thus, the Citadel of Aleppo has become an important part of the history of Syria.
