Homes are an integral part of human evolution. Not only do they save us from severe weather events, but they also serve a significant function in the growth of our society and of our family. Humans have abandoned the nomadic lifestyle and settled down more than 10 thousand years ago.
As a result, demand for better homes keeps growing. This has resulted in the evolution of the areas of architecture, engineering, and construction, (from) cave dwellings to skyscrapers, etc. Homes truly reflect human life progress.
Currently, in this article, we are going to discuss a house that has transformed into a monument of architectural heritage. This house has been one of the landmarks of the town for more than 175 years now. So, let’s dive in and learn more about this house.
The Cupola House
The dwelling of Marengo Cupula’s house was constructed in 1847 by Charles H Hibbard. The model was built for 16000 USD, which was pretty high at that time. It is famous for its characteristic architecture and underground railroad systems. It is a stunning example of Italian-style architecture.
One of the most distinctive features of this house is the octagonal Cupola, a small tower-like structure on the root. This single structure performs a number of different functions such as ventilation, ambient light, and panoramic view of the outside world.
Interior Features
The interior of this house is luxurious and is divided into two floors. The first floor or the main level of the house includes two back bedrooms. These bedrooms served as the servant’s quarters during the early years. Out of the 14 rooms available on both floors, six are bedrooms, and they are located on the second floor. Further, there is a long hallway, a staircase, and a bathroom.
Exterior Features
The building is a fine testimonial of Italian architecture which is well known for its low pitched roof and tall windows. At the same time, the octagonal cupola is enhancing its overall appearance. Originally the property spanned over seven acres with lush green gardens and beautiful landscapes. The exterior of the house offers a peaceful and relaxing environment.
Bedrooms
There are six bedrooms in the entire building, located on the second floor. These bedrooms are accessible through giant staircases leading to the spacious hallway. Each bedroom has old-styled decoration that matches the 1857 era, giving you a nostalgic feeling.
Due to poor maintenance, the building has been dilapidated due to which it was listed as the most endangered landmark in 2003.
But recent makeover and renovation efforts have severely improved the condition and finally, the building was designated as the significant landmark of the city. Today this is more than just the iconic building. This offers a glimpse of the 19th century, allowing future generations to learn from our wealthy ancestors.
