How To Clean A Mattress That Has Been Peed On

Disasters of matters soaked in pee happen, as embarrassing as it is, I learned some of the best methods to clean a mattress that has been peed upon because of my pet dog “Dobby”. (YEAH! I am a Potterhead)

This incident is pretty common in homes with kids or cute little pets. Or maybe you just happened to have them as guests and now you are wondering how to clean up the mess. Don’t worry you are at the right place; let’s get started with easy methods to clean your mattress.

Before starting make sure you have the below listed supplies:

  • Baking soda
  • Spray Bottle
  • Paper towels
  • White vinegar
  • Vacuum

You might have some essential oils for smell, blow dryer for fast drying up, but these are optional without these you can still do, you may use hydrogen peroxide as well but this may cause discolouration.

In three simple steps your problem will be solved.

Step 1

If the pee is fresh and wet, ACT FAST!!! Don’t get a paper towel and soak the yet accumulated urine, remember DON’T RUB, you simply have to soak the urine first as much as possible. Rubbing the urine will only spread it more and might cause a stain hard to be removed.

Step 2

Prepare the solution in your spray bottle, add 3 tablespoons of baking soda, a few drops of liquid soap and a cup of hydrogen peroxide (optional) . Swirl it nice. You can as well add a few drops of essential oil for a delightful non-chemical smell on your mattress, I generally prefer lavender for a restful sleep.

Spray a generous amount of magic solution over the pee stains, cover the area evenly.

Step 3

Now let the mixture sit properly, until dry. It will eventually form a layer of baking soda residue. Finally vacuum the residue and your mattress is set.

If you still see some stains or smell remains. You can repeat the process from step two. Although the trick lies in the patience of step 3, the longer you let the mixture work, lesser you will have to repeat.

If you are really worried about hygiene and stain you can use vinegar solution before applying the mixture. The acid present in vinegar acts as a natural disinfectant and is also effective for stain removal. That’s why now I keep a bottle of white vinegar in my home, it has variant uses you see. Also, you must dilute the vinegar in the spray bottle as it has a strong smell.

Let’s see this way, again only 3 steps to follow:

  • Soak the pee
  • Spray vinegar solution, let it sit for 10-20 mins
  • Then spray the mixture solution of baking soda, let it sit until it dries up and finally vacuum.

The above method is more effective when you already know it, but what if you were just searching for the solution and pee just dried out. In that case you will not have to soak the pee. Directly prepare the solution and saturate the peed area with moisture, you can go vinegar first then the baking soda-soap mixture. Make sure you leave it to rest for longer and then vacuum.

I will advise you to be patient, stains will finally wear off if you repeat the process but just don’t use any harsh chemicals especially the ones with ammonia. A harsh chemical like that is unhealthy for breathing or coming in contact with your skin. You should rather choose a solution with healthy results.

Well as much as we love our pets, we need to understand that cleaning a dog or cat urine is a more sincere task as they have stronger urine smell and need more hygiene focused cleaning. Although the process is similar. You will just have to repeat it at least two times.

Be ready with the supplies mentioned already: 😺

  1. Soaking the urine is really important
  2. Then spray the diluted vinegar, wait for 15 mins.
  3. Cover the area with baking soda solution, let it dry.
  4. Now do the vacuum. Repeat once more!

I personally prefer to do it 2 times for sure as I have this compulsion to keep things really clean. Literally Monica awakens inside me once I smell pee or poop inside my room.
