History & Activities of the Center
Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center was founded in 1983 by a university group. The group was mainly of Arab origin. A small group of families and the North American Islamic Trust purchased a plot of land on June 19, 1983. They first met in a house for prayer, but after that, Brown Marazzi, a Greek-American architect from the area, was engaged to create the mosque’s architecture. Construction proceeded despite the community’s perception that the proposed design had functional flaws and did not accurately represent Islam’s cultural legacy. Muhammad Hadid, a local builder, was chosen to serve as the general contractor. In 1986, construction got underway. When the center was ready, it took Construction was completed in 1991, and the mosque opened on March 2. Initially, 5 million dollars were given, and then some money was given by the Saudi Embassy’s Islamic Affairs Department. In 2004, the mosque was affiliated with the Muslim American Society. Five times a day, prayers are held in the mosque. And on Friday prayers, about 3000 people from different countries joined in September 2004. This center remains active through many other activities such as Lectures, Conferences, Youth recreation, and outdoor activities. Thus, they also perform various acts of awareness and service in society and play their important role.
